A huge thank you to Jinetix and okijo for helping me with the story!

History:
Somewhere in a city ancient china during the Ming dynasty, lived a lord and his wife.
The wife was expecting a child, but the wife was ill, terribly ill.
She did not have much time left until she would join the afterlife, where she'd wait for her husband.
But she had hope, hope that her child would be her cure, her first born. She gave birth to a son, a small pale baby who didn't make a sound.
She had smiled at him, named him Naosu, he was her cure, though unfortunately soon after she passed away.

As Naosu grew up it was more apparent that he was ill just like his mother before him, making him weak and unable to become a successful future lord.
He had a frail structure and a weak heart, he would never be suitable to become the next lord.

The lord could not body the shame and decided to raise Naosu as his daughter, weak, delicate and obedient.
Years passed and Naosu barely grew, he was confused with who he was.
Was he Naosu, the son
Or was she Naosu, the daughter?

It didn't take long for Naosu's sickness to worsen, and was not allowed to leave the house.
If Naosu's health continued this way he'd sure be dead before he could reach the age of twenty, so the lord decided to hire a warrior to search and bring the finest medicine they could afford.

The meeting with the warrior went, , , un-expectedly.
Swooned by beauty, exotic blonde hair and beautiful emerald eyes.
Naosu had fallen, and he had fallen quickly.
It all changed when the warrior opened his mouth.

Greedy.
Worthless.
A shame to the warriors.

How dare that man call himself a warrior!
What was his name again? Okane!
Okane, the warrior.
Okane, the easily manipulated man seeking to give his family honor.

A plan started taking form in Naosu's head
If it was honor Okane seeked, then that's what he was going to get.

The night Okane was ready to depart Naosu confronted him, wanting to come along.
He had never gone farther out than to the mansions pond,  this was his chance to see the world.
Okane refused out right, refusing to be caught in aiding the lord's sick daughter’s escape. Naosu, in a fit of anger, shouted at him that if he didn't bring him with him on his journey, he'd take away what little honor Okane had.
- - - -
At a point during their journey Naosu heard about the legend of the one thousand paper cranes.
The legend goes that if you fold one thousand paper cranes and thread them with a tread, you’d get a wish granted by the gods, like a long life or recovery from any illnesses and injuries. But you’d have to make all in one year.
Determined, Naosu started folding, the first crane was messy, but it was the first piece of a bigger puzzle to regain his health.

1

This were the start for them, if you were to ask Okane when he truly met Naosu you'd get the answer ''At the first one.''
As days went by, Naosu's collection with paper cranes grew.

For the first time in years he was feeling hopeful, Okane often teased him and told him he would bore after the first twenty.

Okane teaching Naosu that it's okay to be himself and let go a bit
A few days had passed since Naosu started folding paper cranes

A strange friendship started blooming between Naosu and Okane as they learned more and more about each other.
Naosu was never a girl, never a lady, but a slave for his lord father’s wishes
Okane was only a tool for honor, ready to give his life and be squashed under a foot like a little bug.

Together they spent nights and days of their journey talking to each other

Together they sat in silence, they had both decided to stop next to a beautiful pond, slowly getting lit up by fireflies in the moonlight, to rest for the night.
Tonight was one of the few days where Naosu did not feel any pain. Okane was the first to enter the water, and after a while he was able to get Naosu into the water as well.

Together in silence they both were in paradise.

They ran out of paper again, Okane was the one to pick out the papers this time around, he picked pure white.
Why is it white like snow?”, Naosu had asked, ''It reminded me of you'' Okane answered, a sly smile on his lips.
They ended up spending a lot of their money on thread and the finest paper available, they would soon continue on their journey

Naosu found himself acting strangely around Okane, he felt like a girl, frail, wanting to be protected.
Okane was worried, those feelings were not feelings he should be having for his client's son, another man.

Curiousity hit Okane one day.
Naosu was riding on his horse as he himself lead them through the forest.
''How do one fold a paper crane'' he asked himself and looked at Naosu while he was skillfully folding a new crane.
What number was it now?
470.
No wonder he was getting good at it.
Naosu noticed Okane staring at his hands and asked with a smile ''Do you wish to make one?'', blushing Okane refused and tried to walk faster, Naosu roared with laughter and gasped out ''You don't know how to fold one? After all these days with me?''.
Naosu reached for Okane's hand and slowly instructed him how to fold one paper crane.
It took Naosu folding three more cranes until Okane got the hold of it.

At least he helped him make some more cranes.

Naosu’s health was declining, sometimes the pain was so miserable that he couldn't seem to get any sleep during the nights.
One night Okane seemed to catch Naosu's distress.
'Hey, shouldn't you be sleeping?' Okane asked in a whisper as he leaned down next to Naosu.
They had both checked-in in a bathhouse, seeking shelter from the rain and a soft bed for Naosu to rest on.
Naosu let out a weak whimper and whispered ''Everything hurts, I can't fall asleep'', Okane sighed sadly and decided to lie down beside him, gently grabing his small and delicate hand.
''I'm going to die'' he whispered again. Okane's grip on his hand got tighter as he answered ''Not on my watch.''
That night Naosu fell into a peaceful slumber with Okane whispering hope into his ear.

Naosu hid behind bushes while he was coughing up blood, Okane worriedly asked him if they should rest for the day. Naosu declined stating that it was only a bad cough.
He felt that he didn’t much time left.

He almost couldn't move, this was it, they are going to part as soon as Naosu's wish would come true.
They’d grown incredibly close to each other, depending on one another, Okane taught the value of himself and Naosu taught Okane how to live.
They were no longer bound by their families honor.
That were the only night they spent together, truly being themselves.

1000.

He had reached 1000 paper cranes, unbelievable he couldn't believe it.
It had taken so many suns and so many moons but he was finally done.
Okane asked him what he wishes for, but what did he really wish for?

Naosu could feel it inside of him, his time was soon, what was the point of the wish?
That night, while Okane was guarding the camp, Naosu made his final wish.
''Please protect him and may he always be in good health.''
Once again Okane asked him what he wished for, to which Naosu replied ''What I have always wanted.''
---
Naosu died, he passed away peacefully in his sleep
His heart had stopped.

He was free, and Okane -

and Okane mourned, he mourned for the loss of a life, for the loss of his friend, for the loss of his lover.
He was supposed he’d head back once one thing came to an end, he had to,
he had failed the one thing he was supposed to do, he had failed the one person he promised to protect.
Ripped away from him as easy as it is to tear a paper apart.

In the corner of his eye he saw something white move, and when he looked closer it was the last piece of paper that was being taken by the wind.
No,
no,
NO!

It could not take the last piece of Naosu away from him!

As Okane held the last piece of paper, he remembered what it was supposed to be for, quickly he started to fold.
1000 paper cranes for one wish.
A wish to join his lover.

Cranes of LuckThe water was warm around his feet as he stepped into the glass like water, ripples breaking up the illusion. Okane furthered himself into the water, making his way near the center of the pond and blew small bubbles as the water made it up to his ears.
“I know you want to come in” He turned and looked back towards the edge of the water where the small frail Naosu sat, legs tucked up to his chest.
Naosu eyed the water and then the blond bobbing near the center shaking his head once more to say no. Okane gave a soft chuckle and made his way back to the shore line and walked out of the water. He allowed the water to drip off of his completely naked body, not giving any attempt to cover himself and Naosu turned away slightly with a blush.
The blond sighed and sat next to Naosu, laying back on the soft grass that lined the pond. He stretched his hand into the air and started moving his wrist like he was drawing in the stars, “I wish every night could be one like this
